Announcer: 96.5 we’re your family’s number one, taking your requests this evening. Now it’s always my favorite time when I get to ring the lovely Helen Baker. She’s our finance expert. Hey, Helen!

Helen: Hi, how are you doing?

Announcer: Good, thank you, now you’ve got some great tips tonight. Setting money goals as a family, as a single person, on your own with a partner. You reckon it’s a good thing to sit down and talk. How do we set these money goals?

Helen: I think if we just create this list that I was thinking of. You could put down, you know, whether it’s a big house, or a small house. You can put down holidays. If you want to maybe debt free, whether you want stress as a goal, private school is or isn’t an important goal, toys or eating out and list all those in order and get your partner or your spouse to do that and yourself to do that and put them in the order of importance and see how you compare because what you want to do is we’d all like to have everything that opens and shuts but it sometimes just doesn’t work out that way.

So being able to make choices in order of importance to both of you so you’re on the same page because we can always just try and keep up with the Jones’s and get a bigger house, bigger house, bigger house but if we start to look at what’s really important to us and what things we’re looking to compromise on to make sure the money ticks as many boxes as it possibly can in the priorities that we want them to be.

So sitting down and working out what’s your value system around those things, what’s really important to you and the same for your partner, a way to head in that direction knowing you are both on the same page.

Announcer: That is perfect because some of us can bury our head in the sand when it comes to money and you can be going on to a totally different tangent. And just as you say even if you’re a single person, just to take some time out to sit down and say okay, what’s important to me, what do I want to do going ahead? And you never know, you might meet Mr. Right and you know where you’re going and you can evaluate the goals that he brings along or she brings along.

Helen: Absolutely and mesh those together so you’ve really got the same goals and values.

Announcer: Helen, as I say every week, you just make it sound so simple and I always come away learning so much. Thank you so much.

Helen: You’re very welcome, take care.

Announcer: We will catch up with her again next week. If you would like to find out more it’s Helen Baker at OnYourOwnTwoFeet.com.au.
